The Christmas tree at Northport Elementary School

first_imgThe Christmas tree at Northport Elementary School is special this year, because students helped in the decorating and helped save the planet at the same time.Northport Elementary Library Media Specialist Cristal Avent said she thought the school’s Christmas tree would be a good place for students to find ways to make Alabama better for future generations through recycling. After brainstorming with a fellow teacher, she came up with the idea to make recyclables into ornaments.“I wanted something that the children enjoyed looking at because they enjoy seeing each other projects when we display them here in the library,” Avent said. “And so just in brainstorming, throwing around ideas in my mind, I thought, hey, it would fit, be perfect if we used repurposed items and made ornaments and decorated a tree in the library.”Northport Elementary School recently received an Alabama Bicentennial grant to start a recycling program.last_img
